SEED WARTS: MINUTE AND IRRITATING

Warts are unattractive lesions or fleshy growths on the skin. The source of warts can be attributed to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which causes highly contagious skin infections. Warts often appear on the hands, feet or other sensitive areas like ano-genital regions and mouth. The diverse types of warts are flat warts, common warts, plantar warts, genital warts and seed warts. Though all these types of warts may sound alike, each of them has its own special characteristics. Therefore, the treatment for each of the warts may be different.

Seed warts or common warts usually grow on fingers, skin surrounding the nails and on the back of hands. These have an appearance of black dots and are caused by the surrounding blood vessels. On the other hand, plantar warts may occur on the sensitive pressure points under your feet. They can be invisible to naked human eye but can be seen by Colposcopy or magnification. The causes behind seed warts include skin contact with the infected person or having a weak immune system. The sun bathing acts as catalyst by increasing the growth of these warts, especially in fair skinned people. The common symptoms include pain, inflammation, protruding skin and redness.

The condition of seed warts might turn serious, yet it is mostly ignored by those infected. Presently, there are no cures or treatments to check the growth of HPV. But there are numerous treatments available for seed warts. Some treatments are listed below:

  • The topical seed warts can be cured by treatments like Imiquimod and Bleomycin. These      treatments are recommended by professional doctors when seed warts are on a growth spree. However, pregnant women are not advised Imiquimod.

  • CryoTherapy – In this particular treatment, the warts are frozen with liquid nitrogen and then removed by excision. This treatment is advised when the seed warts reach extreme stages. Scars may be left after this treatment.

  • Cantharidin – The chemical Cantharidin is painted on the wart and then bandage is applied on it. Some pain occurs in the wart area for about three to eight hours after the treatment. (1)

  • Surgical Treatment – The surgical treatment entails the use of a sharp blade to cut away and remove the seed warts. It is painful but rather quick. This treatment is not encouraged because it causes the seed warts to recur.

  • Laser Surgery – This treatment is expensive as compared to others but is most effective. A laser source removes the seed warts without any pain.

Seed warts are not only a disease but also affect a person’s social life. Prevention is better than cure, especially in case of seed warts. Here are some of the precautions that you can follow in order to nip the warts in the bud.

  • Avoid skin contact with an infected person. The HPV virus is highly contagious and can easily travel from one person to another with just a single skin contact. Your surroundings should also be hygienic.

  • If your seed warts are in initial stage, don’t scratch the affected skin. Clean the area with disinfectant. (2)

  • Also, warts may spread to other areas of the body. Avoid touching other body parts.

  • Sexual contact is the prime cause of warts. Be faithful to one partner and enjoy a healthy life.

Most of the warts eventually go away on their own due to our immune system. So, they can be ignored for some time. But not when you have started to experience pain. It means that warts have developed and now require treatment. Seed warts are not dangerous but infected person has to endure constant pain and suffering.
